Canada’s West Coast Dressage Riders Strut Their Stuff at California CDI3*’s

Ottawa Ontario - Canadian dressage riders recently traveled to California for the Burbank and Rancho Murieta CDI3*’s held on consecutive weekends March 30 - April 2, and April 6 – 9, 2006.

The Canadian contingent held their own in the Burbank CDI divisions with Leslie Reid of Langley, BC earning a score of 68.3% to finish third in the Intermediaire I aboard the 10-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding Orion, owned by Patricia Hatch. Rochelle Kilberg of Surrey, BC also helped keep Canadians on the results board earning 65.2% to tie for sixth in the same class with Ben Vermeulen’s 13-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding Lanzar.

Reid and Orion stepped it up in the CDI Intermediaire Freestyle to capture the win with a score of 69.4%. With her second mount of the class, Pallas, Reid secured fourth with 64.4%. Pallas is a nine-year-old Dutch Warmblood stallion, owned by Bettina Teixeira.

Kilberg and Lanzar also contested the Freestyle, placing third with a score of 65.8%. Other Canadian results included a fifth place finish for Karen Pavicic of Richmond, BC and her nine-year-old Hannoverian gelding, Lionheart. Eleonore Elstone of Langley, BC was right behind in sixth place, after receiving a score of 62.3% on Olivier, her 10-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding.

In the Prix St. Georges Reid and Orion achieved a score of 69.2% for third place, with Pavicic and Lionheart scoring just 3 per cent below them, earning sixth place. Kilberg and Lanzar finished in ninth place with a score of 64%. The duo also secured a win in the Intermediaire I Open, scoring 69.5%.

In the Prix St. Georges Open division Reid and Orion added a win to their record, earning their highest score of the competition, with 71.5%. Pavicic and Lionheart took second place with 69.3%, and Reid scored another ribbon, receiving fifth place with Pallas after a score of 65.3%.

Alexandra Duncan of West Vancouver, BC, represented Canada in the Young Riders division. Having won the Dressage Canada National Championships in 2005, Duncan and her 11-year-old Holsteiner mare, Elektra, made a fantastic debut in the CDI Young Rider division. The pair placed fourth in the FEI Young Rider (YR) warm-up Team test, fifth in the FEI YR Team Test, where they received a score of 60.4% and sixth in the YR PSG. The duo ended the competition on a high note, receiving their best score, 67.4%, to take first place in the FEI YR Freestyle.

At the Rancho Murieta CDI3* April 6 - 9, 2006, the Canadian riders improved upon their performances, dominating both the Advanced and Young Rider divisions.

Reid and Orion dominated not only in the Intermediaire I, where they received the winning score of 69.3%, but also in the Prix St Georges, where they topped the class of 13 competitors scoring 68.7%.

Kilberg and Lanzar’s Intermediaire I score of 64% earned them third place, while their score of 63.7% placed them fourth in the Prix St Georges. In that same class, Rebecca Garrard and her Dutch Warmblood gelding, OCH Heden, came in eighth position after their performance scored 61.4%.

Duncan and Elektra once again contested the Young Riders division and gave stellar performances to win the Young Rider Individual with a score of 64%, and the Young Rider Team test with a score of 64.2%.
